School Based Drug Prevention Programs Needed

In Wisconsin, a news report uncovers the details of a survey by Rise Together that summarizes that 50% of middle and high school students experiment with controlled substances illegally such as alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. Of the 3,000 students polled last school year, many admit to knowing about substance abuse and the presence of a support system in schools and communities. This school year, in response to the study results, Rise Together and its partners in Healthy Youth Bright Futures have agreed to a new advocacy campaign for SBIRT or Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment program. This program will form part of the supplemental support for students in need. The program is the solution to the students desire for more education, prevention, and intervention to help them fight peer pressure, stress, curiosity, and everyday challenges. Anthony Alvarado, cofounder of Rise Together says that students are aware of the temptation but are not capable of fighting it so it is up to the adults to help them, the future generation. This is supported by studies that many cases of addiction begins before age 18. SBIRT is being implemented under the Wisconsin Safe and Healthy School Center with the assistance of the Department of Health Services and Department of Instruction.
