A quick look at recent addiction-related articles show a trend to depict drug addiction as a choice or habit instead of a chronic disease of the brain that can be treated. There have been multiple studies showing the link between the brain’s chemical balance or neuroscience and addiction. Thus, to tag drug addiction as a habit implies no acknowledgment of this link and will therefore means that the treatment will be inadequate since it does not treat the source but the symptom. According to Dr. Michael Brant-Zawadski of the Hoag Nuerosciences Institute, MRI images clearly show how drugs affect brain function even a year after abstinence. Drugs therefore take over self-control and behavior which is why medical intervention is a necessary part of treatment. Other treatment necessary are medical detox, medical therapy, cognitive behavioral medicine, family involvement, and mental health. It should also be made aware that relapses will happen and is not an indication of failure but the need to adjust treatment. Comprehensive treatment is what addicts deserve and it would be intellectually dishonest to deprive them of this based on the idea that addiction is a habit.
