Binghamton has a new program, a first for New York State, for new mothers fighting addiction which is funded by the Binghamton Office of Children and Family Services. In the local YMCA, an open house was held recently to introduce this program called the Bridge Program. This program will offer new mothers in recovery a supportive environment where they can take care of their newborns who are addicted to opiates. According to Carole Coppens the YMCA Executive Director, this is an exciting development because it will impact many lives. YMCA is already housing the homeless and will be adding 8 new apartments for the new mothers. It will include 24/7 support, counseling, and case management, among others. The idea is to remove all challenges to full recovery while providing the necessary support needed by new mothers. Women in the program will be allowed to stay in YMCA for 7 to 17 months but they have to be either pregnant or close to their due date. To date, there are already 2 women enrolled in the program.
