The Stigma of Addiction: A Mother’s Point of View

Marybeth Cichocki, who lost her son to addiction, speaks out against the stigma that the society has on substance abuse and addiction. Her son, Matt, died due to a drug overdose. She pointed out that the common notion on drug addicts involved those homeless people living on the streets, prostitutes, hiding under bridges and alleys, and the likes. This stigma also affected her at first, and it blinded her of the real problem that she has to face at home. Marybeth was a nurse and she couldn’t believe her fate, which is having a son whom is addicted. She blamed herself as she found numerous excuses for her situation. Eventually, she had to take away her blinders and be open with her son’s condition. The public’s stigma is clearly proven as many family friends steered away from them. That is why she wanted to be an advocate for her son and for all who are experiencing the same hardship. She advocates for change and awareness regarding addiction. These addicts need help and they are denied of proper treatment because of the stigma.
