D.C. Week: CMS Touts ACOs, Docs Need Addiction Training

Although we’re all on the same side, addiction professionals and physicians face different problems when it come to those with drug addiction. Recently several experts testified to a congressional committee that physicians need more training on how to handle their patients who have developed addiction to opioid painkillers, often prescribed by the physicians themselves.

Addiction professionals focus on the addiction, while physicians are intent on pain management and receive relatively little training on recognizing and treating substance abuse. Medical education needs to expand to give more attention to this growing problem.
