Many of our brave men and women in uniform face mental health challenges, even as they work hard to keep us safe. These individuals encounter traumatic experiences while fighting fires, crimes, and wars, which can lead to unpleasant thoughts and feelings that linger long after the danger has passed.
To cope with these feelings, some turn to alcohol or drugs, which, over time, can lead to addiction and make the situation worse. This leads to isolation, social stigma, and in severe situations — suicide.
The Help For Our Heroes program provides a customized plan to help individuals in this population recover from the traumas they’ve faced and the mental health challenges that stem from them.
Unique Challenges Facing First Responders and Military Veterans
Unfortunately, soldiers and first responders are exposed to trauma like horrific accidents, severe combat, and the risk of becoming disabled during their daily duties. Without proper coping skills, these experiences could lead to negative consequences.
They include:
- Addiction
- Alcoholism
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety Disorder
- Depression
- Suicidal Ideations
Adjusting to life after experiencing trauma can be challenging, especially when compounded by substance use or mental health disorders. Therapy for veterans and first responders like Help For Our Heroes can help.
We’re Here to Serve Those Who Protect
Did you know that one in every ten military veterans has a diagnosed substance use disorder?
After military service, veterans often feel that they lack the same support available to active-duty soldiers. Struggling with the traumas of war, they might turn to alcohol or drugs as a means of coping. This can lead to a higher risk of developing substance use disorder and addiction or even committing suicide.
The Help For Our Heroes Program was created in 2017 by military veterans and first responders who understand the unique challenges faced by those who have served. This program provides specialized therapy for veterans with mental health challenges, addiction, and substance use disorders. We also offer treatment options for active-duty military personnel as well as those in reserve.
First Line Care for First Responders
First responders share a bond with their peers that extends beyond their duties. Because of the tragedies they encounter every day, they often feel their peers are the only ones who will understand the feelings they struggle with. Because of their perceived lack of support, first responders are at an increased risk of abusing substances to cope.
Help For Our Heroes provides a variety of evidence-based therapeutic programs tailored to treat the unique needs of first responders in multiple professions, including:
- Hospital physicians
- Emergency room nurses
- EMT workers / Paramedics
- Firefighters
- Prison wardens
- Correctional officers
- Armed security officers
Help For Our Heroes: Trauma Therapy for Veterans
At Transformations, we provide trauma therapy for military veterans and first responders with substance use disorders and the mental health issues that accompany them.
We understand that some individuals may need support beyond a standard outpatient program. For this reason, we offer intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and inpatient residential programs that include medically supervised detox.
Medically supervised detox is provided on-site in a safe and comfortable environment. Our supervising staff is medically trained and constantly monitors patients to ensure they remain comfortable.
Additional treatments in the Help For Our Heroes program include:
- Trauma Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Stress management
- Grief and loss healing
