When combined with intensive outpatient care, treatment with medication is a viable option for treating opioid use disorder.
This evidence-based treatment technique combines the use of medication designed to reduce the difficult physical symptoms associated with stopping use, along with behavioral psychotherapy and counseling.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is primarily used to treat addiction to opioids including heroin and prescription pain relievers. Medications such as Suboxone and partial opioid agonist, help reduce physiological cravings, withdrawal symptoms and normalize body functions and brain chemistry.
Suboxone can play an important role in an opioid treatment program, and at Transformations Treatment Center in Delray Beach, FL, we offer treatment with medication support as an option in all our substance abuse treatment programs.
Medication on its own will not treat substance use disorders such as addiction to opioids, prescription medication or pain killers. However, when used along with continued psychiatric care, individual counseling, behavioral therapy, social support and aftercare planning, Medication-Assisted Treatment can be an important part of a successful addiction treatment program.
Transformations Treatment Center in Delray Beach, FL uses MAT along with counseling and behavioral therapies to offer a holistic, whole-person approach for treating substance use disorders and co occurring mental health issues. Our programs are tailored to meet the individualized needs of each client.
Medication-Assisted Treatment is offered at Transformations Treatment Center in Delray Beach, FL on a case-by-case basis. All clients have to meet specific medical and clinical criteria to be accepted into the IOP program with medication management.
Taking medications prescribed by a doctor is often a vital part of a person’s overall health and recovery. Opioid addiction is a chronic disease, similar to diabetes or cardiovascular disease. As with any other chronic disease, medication may be required to correct the imbalances caused by that disease.
Individuals with a dual diagnosis (a co-occurring substance use disorder and mental health disorder) may need antidepressants or mood stabilizers for the rest of their life. While the goal of Transformations Treatment Center’s recovery program in Delray Beach, FL is abstinence from addictive drugs and alcohol, that does not always mean the cessation of supportive medications. Some people may need supportive medications, including Suboxone and Vivitrol, for a longer time than others. For this reason, evidenced-based, ongoing medical management and monitoring is a key element to treat opioid dependence in collaboration with clinical therapies and self-help groups.
The use of Medication-Assisted Treatment as part of a comprehensive program is one element of individualized treatment offered at Transformations Treatment Center In Delray Beach, FL. In all cases, the treatment plan includes individual and group therapy, psychiatric care, self-help supportive groups, recreational activities, support from friends and family and an extensive aftercare plan. The addition of Medication-Assisted Treatment adds supportive medications as an element of a comprehensive substance abuse program.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has approved 3 drugs for the treatment of opioid addiction. At Transformations Treatment Center In Delray Beach, FL we utilize Suboxone, a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, and naltrexone, a medication that acts to block the effects of opioids and reduce physical dependence or cravings.
When taken by a person with a history of consuming powerful opioids such as heroin, buprenorphine binds to the opioid receptors in the brain to help diminish the intensity of withdrawal symptoms and reduce substance cravings.
MAT at Transformations includes the following steps:
We understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery; for this reason, we offer every client an individualized treatment plan based on their clinical recommendations. When combined with intensive outpatient care, treatment with medication is a viable option for treating opioid use disorder. MAT is available as a part of our IOP program on either a daytime or evening schedule. Clients meet 4 times a week for a total of 9 hours of clinical care per week and one hour of life skills.
