Over the weekend, I watched Words on Bathroom Walls, a thought-provoking film highlighting the challenges faced by a teenager named Adam, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
This film shines a light on mental health issues in our youth and delves into the internal struggles Adam faced due to his often-intense symptoms. I felt I was right alongside Adam on an emotional rollercoaster through diagnoses, experimental treatments, family changes, and the challenges of a young adult just trying to enjoy their teenage years while navigating uncharted waters. Most importantly, this film highlights the importance of strong support systems, empathy, understanding, and unconditional love when someone is living with a mental illness.
Some moments in the movie may have been over-dramatized, possibly unrealistic, and had a touch of Hollywood cheesiness. They also threw in the high-school love story and dashes of humor for good measure. Still, this movie is an essential addition to the film industry as the need for advocacy surrounding mental health grows.
This film serves as a reminder to show compassion to those around us because we have no idea what they are dealing with. Individuals diagnosed with mental health conditions are not broken; they are unique in their own beautiful ways, craving acceptance and human connection like so many others.
