Sports are not my thing, so if you have come to this blog looking for a rundown of the recent Dolphins game that the alumni department attended, you’ve come to the wrong place. I am a far cry from being a sports journalist (or any journalist, for that matter). All I know is that we won (42-21) and had an incredible time.
You may be wondering, ‘How does someone who does not like or understand football have fun at a Dolphins game?.’ The answer is simple: I was in good company.
Being in recovery has motivated me to want to try new things. It has also taught me that I can have fun and be sober anywhere, anytime, so long as I have the right intentions for being there and as long as I am with the right people, so fun is exactly what was had.
We rented a shuttle bus, drove down together, had some genuine sober belly laughs, attended the NFL-sponsored recovery meeting before the game, ate WAY too much food (the Hard Rock Stadium has excellent Empanadas, FYI), and we all were able to wake up the following day remembering it all.
One of the coolest things about this event was that they had a section in the stadium that was marked “alcohol-free” and considered a “sober zone.” Yup! In this section, you literally cannot bring a beer back to your seat. You would have never known that this section did not allow alcohol because the energy coming from the fans was not lacking. It was powerful to look around the stadium, knowing that so many other sober individuals were also enjoying the game.
So, although I can’t tell you who scored a touchdown, field goal, or any of the player’s names on the team, I can tell you that I am already looking forward to going back next year. Thank you to our amazing alumni who showed up for the game. We could not do what we do without you, and you are inspiring others daily with your decision to attend events such as this one with a clear mind.
